The Round Lake augmentation wells help maintain a safe and enjoyable water level for everyone who uses the lake. During periods of low water, the wells supplement the lake to help keep it navigable for residents and visitors.

Gary and Linda Smith oversee the operation of the augmentation well pumps and monitor lake levels throughout the season.  Charlie Dorrell and Gary also inspect the weir and the water flow beneath Cooley Lake Road to ensure debris does not block the water, especially after heavy rains.

For many years, a gauge stick beneath the Round Lake Boulevard bridge was used to measure the lake level. Because it has shifted over time, it is no longer considered accurate. Today, lake levels are monitored using a more precise gauge located near the weir, allowing for accurate readings and visual confirmation of the water level.

Maintaining the proper lake level is important for many reasons. It allows residents to safely navigate boats between Round Lake, the Caprice Canal, and the Needle Island Canal. It also provides enough water depth for weed treatment and aquatic vegetation harvesting equipment to operate effectively, helping keep the lake healthy and enjoyable.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) established the legal operating lake level when the weir was installed. To comply with state regulations, the augmentation pumps must be turned off before water flows over the weir. Pump operation is carefully monitored, and the pumps are shut down before the lake reaches an elevation of 935.0 feet or whenever significant rainfall is expected. This helps protect the lake, prevents unnecessary pumping, and ensures compliance with EGLE requirements.

The augmentation wells are a valuable resource for Round Lake. They help maintain water levels during dry periods, support safe boating, and contribute to preserving the lake for the enjoyment of all residents.
